Frederick Barreda Sherman photograph collection, 1850-1889.

This collection contains reprinted photographs relating to the career of Peruvian diplomat and businessman Frederico Luciano Barreda y Aquilar and his wife. Barreda was, at one point, ambassador to the new administration of Abraham Lincoln and was also involved in diplomatic relations with several European countries. The photographs depict European and American Aristocracy in the 19th century.

Federico Luciano Barreda y Aquilar was born in Spain and immigrated to Peru at the age of thirteen. In 1851, with his older brother Felipe, he obtained a lucrative contract to market Peruvian guano in the United States. Federico established an office in Baltimore, Maryland, and purchased property in Newport, and on Madison Avenue in New York. Barreda worked with the Peruvian government as a confidential agent, was an ambassador under Abraham Lincoln, and served as Peru's plenipotentiary in negot...
